African Missions

The Christ to the Villages Mission ministers to hundreds of persons in the remote villages of central Nigeria.

Rev. Solomon Oladele, the director of the mission, was born into an animist family. A group of Missionaries preaching the Gospel message convinced Solomon to become a Christian. Persecuted by both his family and Muslim leaders, he continued in the faith and later answered the Lord's call into full- time ministry.

The Mission has 16 village churches, 28 preaching stations, and maintains a ministry to a nearby army barracks. They also provide food and clothing for the poor and limited aid to the sick. Still hundreds of villagers are untouched by God's word.

Alpha Nursery and Primary School at Shao has an enrollment of 600. Its sister school, at Oloru, enrolls 100 students. The Omega High School was established in September 1997 and currently educates 63 students. The first phase of a hostel for students was completed in October 1998. Twenty-seven trained and dedicated Christian adults teach in the three schools.

The Christ to the Villages Mission has assisted seven village churches with erecting simple buildings for worship. The other churches meet under the trees.

The Mission is suffering the effects of political unrest and staggering inflation. Many persons including children and the elderly look to Christ to the Villages for assistance. Your generous support will enable this mission to continue its ministry of education, compassion and Gospel ministry.

By expressing compassion for suffering people, the medical work of CrossWorld demonstrates the love of Christ in a tangible way.

At the same time, it contributes to meeting the needs of the whole person. In so doing, bridges of friendship are often built and the Gospel can be shared in an atmosphere of trust and respect.

It started more than 60 years ago. In 1946, Bishop Henry Knox Sherrill, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, set a goal of one million dollars per year for the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief. On nationwide radio, he challenged the Christian brothers and sisters of his communion to raise one million dollars in one hour. And they did!

What began as a challenge has become a tradition for many Christian churches. Today, more than a dozen church families, including our National Association, have taken up the challenge and kept the tradition alive. Every offering is unique, but the goal is ever the same: in the spirit of Christ, to help people help themselves in places of poverty, hunger, sickness, conflict, emergency and natural disaster.

In recent years, the churches of our National Association have contributed more than $600,000 to One Great Hour of Sharing programs: $240,000 to Tsumani relief, $260,000 to help with ravages of Hurricane Katrina, and more than $100,000 to a host of missions and ministries targeting hunger, homelessness, earthquakes, flooding, tornadoes and typhoons.

Every effort is made to work through member churches and missions closest to those in need. Recent donations to help those affected by tornadoes in the midwest, specifically those in greensburg, kansas, have been shepherded by the people of maple hill community congregational church in maple hill, kansas. Similar efforts on our churches' behalf have been offered by the people of cedarwood church in wetumpka, alabama in response to hurricane katrina, and the travencore church council of south india in response to those affected by the tsunami.

Where our churches and missions are not present, we work through respected and responsible organizations such as the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, World Vision and Church World Service, all of them Christian, four star Charity Navigator recommended agencies.

There are many ways for you and your church to be involved. You can take a One Great Hour of Sharing offering in response to a particular cause or concern. You can also set aside a Sunday, or several Sundays, every year to take an OGHS collection. Designated funds will be sent in a timely manner. General monies will be held by the Missionary Society to be distributed as needs arise.

To be sure, the world has changed since 1946. But human needs have stayed the same. Please remember to make OGHS a part of your own and your church's giving. Monies may be sent to the Missionary Society at any time. Many will be served, and many will be grateful, for your help in making God's love real in times of need.

Relief funds may be requested with little or no advanced warning. To assure that reserve funds are available when needed, please contribute to the One Great Hour of Sharing Fund throughout the year. Special OGHS envelops are available through the NA office.

The Pilgrim's Presence Mission of Kiwawa is located in the West Pokot District of Kenya. This area is predominately semi-arid with only four percent cultivatable land. Among the various tribes of Kenya, the Pokot with a population of 300,000, form one of the most marginalized communities in Kenya.

The Pokot people have retained significant elements of their traditional culture. Much of their lives revolve around the care of livestock. These pastoral communities have failed to settle permanently due to the ongoing need to locate new pasturelands. The status of women remains low among the Pokot as evidenced by initiation rites that include excision and forced marriage at an early age. As a result of their nomadic lifestyle, the Pokot have failed to see the value of education especially for girls. In this tradition, parents would prefer that their daughters marry in exchange for a dowry, usually animals, called the "bride price." For many years the Pokot have been at war with their neighbors mainly the Turkana, the Karamojong, and the Sabiny.

The Colonial Church of Edina, Minnesota, initiated the Pilgrim's Presence Mission in co-operation with World Vision, Kenya. The project was adopted by the Missionary Society in 1992. The mission director, reports that the goal of this ministry is to help these people transform their lives by gaining an understanding of their problems in a changing world.

Pilgrim's Presence has an increasing need for scholarship assistance to help with the development of leaders to promote the "Pokot helping Pokot" approach to mission. The POKATUSA Program was formed to look into ways of establishing a lasting peace with neighboring tribes and communities. Due to the vulnerability to famine, a food security program is being established.

Located on the Atlantic shore of Ghana, Word Alive Missions Association serves numerous villages and towns in Western, Ghana. The Rev. Charles Nyane leads the mission in concert with the board of trustees. After attending seminary in the United States, Rev. Nyane returned to Ghana to establish the mission. Founded in 1996, Word Alive has experienced rapid growth.

By January of 2000, the mission expanded to ten churches, two schools and an orphanage. The churches are spread over a seventy-five mile radius from the mission office and first church in Takoradi. Each church has a pastor. The mission's schools are located in Esiama. After seeing the positive work of the Word Alive churches, the Esiama Chief donated a 20-acre campus for the mission's schools and orphanage. Living Stone Christian School offers elementary education to the children of the area and is considered the best in the region. Enrollment reached 260 in 2000. Word Alive Bible College offers courses in New and Old Testament studies, Biblical Interpretation, Greek, Hebrew and Theology. It is a training ground for those entering ministry and a resource for area pastors. Word Alive Orphanage houses foundling children. Myth and superstition of the polygamous Nzema tribe teach that a tenth child will curse a family. In remote areas the tenth child is abandon in the jungle or put to death at birth. The orphanage takes in such children, raises and educates them, making what was once cursed a blessing.

Word Alive has recently opened the Solid Rock Vocational Center in Tokoradi. Word Alive School of Nursing, one of only four nursing schools in Ghana, was just opened in Esiama.

Today about 200 million people do not have the Bible in their own language. Wycliffe's vision is to see the Bible accessible to all people in the language they understand best. To make this vision a reality, Wycliffe also focuses on literacy development, community development and church partnerships.
