Rev. Sa Do, of the Cong. Churches of Myanmar

Myanmar hit by Cyclone Nargis Cyclone Nargis, a category four storm, swept across southern Myanmar on May 2 and 3 leaving 134,000 people dead or missing and some 2.4 million people destitute. The storm washed away or severely damaged the stocks and fields of most of the Iriwaddy Delta's rural households, leaving many families little to sustain them in the coming months.

Message from Rev. Sa Do, of the Cong. Churches of Myanmar: Many destitute people are coming to churches, they need food clothes, shelter. We started to sharing our rice with the needy people. Sharing rice with other church families Home destroyed by Cyclone I am very worry on my mission fields as my places included most terrible places which the storm destroyed. Preschool damaged by storm One of our preschools and church roofs have been destroyed by the storm. Now we are focusing on reconstruction issues not only food relief. We urgently request you continue to pray for these destitute people, and many orphans.

The mission's goals are four-fold: (1) to support local pastors in their ministry to NACC churches; (2) to share the love and compassion of Christ through spiritual nurture and material assistance; (3) to plant Congregational Churches in the surrounding villages and suburbs; and, (4) to help educate children and train them for future leadership in NACC churches. The NACC serves 33 churches.

It started more than 60 years ago. In 1946, Bishop Henry Knox Sherrill, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, set a goal of one million dollars per year for the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief. On nationwide radio, he challenged the Christian brothers and sisters of his communion to raise one million dollars in one hour. And they did!

What began as a challenge has become a tradition for many Christian churches. Today, more than a dozen church families, including our National Association, have taken up the challenge and kept the tradition alive. Every offering is unique, but the goal is ever the same: in the spirit of Christ, to help people help themselves in places of poverty, hunger, sickness, conflict, emergency and natural disaster.

In recent years, the churches of our National Association have contributed more than $600,000 to One Great Hour of Sharing programs: $240,000 to Tsumani relief, $260,000 to help with ravages of Hurricane Katrina, and more than $100,000 to a host of missions and ministries targeting hunger, homelessness, earthquakes, flooding, tornadoes and typhoons.

Every effort is made to work through member churches and missions closest to those in need. Recent donations to help those affected by tornadoes in the midwest, specifically those in greensburg, kansas, have been shepherded by the people of maple hill community congregational church in maple hill, kansas. Similar efforts on our churches' behalf have been offered by the people of cedarwood church in wetumpka, alabama in response to hurricane katrina, and the travencore church council of south india in response to those affected by the tsunami.

Where our churches and missions are not present, we work through respected and responsible organizations such as the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, World Vision and Church World Service, all of them Christian, four star Charity Navigator recommended agencies.

There are many ways for you and your church to be involved. You can take a One Great Hour of Sharing offering in response to a particular cause or concern. You can also set aside a Sunday, or several Sundays, every year to take an OGHS collection. Designated funds will be sent in a timely manner. General monies will be held by the Missionary Society to be distributed as needs arise.

To be sure, the world has changed since 1946. But human needs have stayed the same. Please remember to make OGHS a part of your own and your church's giving. Monies may be sent to the Missionary Society at any time. Many will be served, and many will be grateful, for your help in making God's love real in times of need.

Relief funds may be requested with little or no advanced warning. To assure that reserve funds are available when needed, please contribute to the One Great Hour of Sharing Fund throughout the year. Special OGHS envelops are available through the NA office.

The London Missionary Society sent the first Congregational Missionaries to India in 1820. As a result, a group of Congregational Churches were gathered in the southern part of India that is known as the Travancore Church Council. Forty-five churches, ranging in size from 20 to 1400 families, now spread the gospel in the state of Tamil Nadu. Some of these congregations worship in thatched sheds. Additionally, there are ten missionaries working in Northern India, with plans to spread God's word. Under the leadership of Rev. Kenaz Solomon, these churches face strong opposition in a culture hostile to any foreign faith. It is essential that we support this important work. Rev. Solomon and his wife, Kamazh, along with sons Sammy and David have ministered faithfully as a missionary family for many years. They serve the Lord with a sense of loyalty to Christ and the Congregational Way. The Travancore Church Council sponsors:

  • Sunday Schools with an enrollment of more that 5,000 children. The TCC prepares a common Sunday School curriculum for Churches.
  • Congregational Christian Hospital - A 30 bed hospital at Palliyadi serves 14 villages (30,000 people). Schools One Elementary School and a Christian Middle School. The government provides a noon meal and textbooks for students.
  • The Women's Christian Fellowship General Council oversees six sewing schools for young women to prepare them for careers. The Hand Embroidery Project involves women who work with linen items. These goods are available for sale through NA Churches. Additionally, the Women's Fellowship is running five nursery schools.
  • Christian Youth Welfare Association Hundreds of young men and women are members of TCC Churches. This association helps to provide fellowship with other Congregational youth.

Today about 200 million people do not have the Bible in their own language. Wycliffe's vision is to see the Bible accessible to all people in the language they understand best. To make this vision a reality, Wycliffe also focuses on literacy development, community development and church partnerships.
